The Progressive Second Price Auction Mechanism for Network Resource Sharing
نویسنده
چکیده
In the emerging multiservice communication networks (ATM, Next-Generation Internet), traditional approaches to pricing are not viable. In telephony, the resources allocated to a call are xed, and usage prices are based on the predictability of the number of active calls at any given moment. But the wide and rapidly evolving range of applications (including some which adapt to resource availability) in the new networks makes demand much more di cult to predict. On the other hand , the current Internet practice of pricing by the physical capacity decouples actual use of resources from the monetary charges, making the network vulnerable to the well-known \tragedy of the commons". Thus there is a need to develop new approaches to pricing of network resources, which has led to much research in recent years (see [11, 8, 7, 3, 12, 9, 2] for a representative sample).

Design, Analysis and Simulation of the Progressive Second Price Auction for Network Bandwidth Sharing
We present the Progressive Second Price auction, a new decentralized mechanism for allocation of variable-size shares of a resource among multiple users. Unlike most mechanisms in the economics litterature, PSP is designed with a very small message space, making it suitable for real-time market pricing of communication bandwidth. Under elastic demand, the PSP auction is incentive compatible and...
متن کاملAuctions for Network Resource
We consider the use of an auction as a decentralized mechanism for eeciently and fairly sharing resources in a network. We present a new auction rule called Progressive Second Price, and prove that it has a \truthful" Nash equilibrium. We give necessary conditions for the resulting allocations to be fair (envy-free), and demonstrate that, with a large population of small users, the allocations ...

متن کاملMarket clearing price and equilibria of the progressive second price mechanism
The Progressive Second Price mechanism (PSP), recently introduced by Lazar and Semret to share an infinitely-divisible resource among users through pricing, has been shown to verify very interesting properties. Indeed, the incentive compatibility property of that scheme, and the convergence to an efficient resource allocation where established, using the framework of Game Theory. Therefore, tha...
متن کاملHierarchical Auctions for Network Resource Allocation
Motivated by allocation of cloud computing services, bandwidth and wireless spectrum in secondary network markets, we introduce a hierarchical auction model for network resource allocation. The Tier 1 provider owns all of the resource, who holds an auction in which the Tier 2 providers participate. Each of the Tier 2 providers then holds an auction to allocate the acquired resource among the Ti...

Market Mechanisms for Network Resource Sharing Nemo Semret The theme of this thesis is the design and analysis of decentralized and distributed market mechanisms for resource sharing in multiservice networks. The motivation for a market-based approach is twofold. First, in modern multiservice networks, resources such as bandwidth and bu er space have di erent value to di erent users, and these ...
